The Race to End Domestic Violence.
SATURDAY, SEPT 23, 2006: 8:00am
INLINE SKATING EVENT! "BREAK FREE 5K SKATE" Thanks to the 32 skaters, SkateNow, the Salt City Roller Derby Team, and the City of West Jordan for another sucessful skating event. Proceeds from the event go towards helping put a stop to domestic violence, a fundraiser for the West Jordan Victim Assistance Program.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23rd: Sure we all wish we were back at home in the comfort of our cozy thermal jammies. Cold temps aside, 32 brave skaters came out to enjoy the event. The dark morning skies of 6:30 am over West Jordan started with a chilly Utah 38º 's, (Q: hmmm, should I wax the skis or go skate? A: SKATE!!!) Skies were crips n' clear by 8:00am, and as soon as the sun popped over the Wasatch front things began to warm up fast. Skaters arrived smartly dressed for the occassion, in thermal digs, including: mittens, hats, fleeces, or anything to keep 'em warm out on the 5K course.
The race started at 8:00am promptly, with Uel Achulette, Eva Rodansky, Eric Lineback, and Inacio Lopez busting off the line and teaming up through the entire course, with skaters in hot persuit. From my vantage point (as course sweeper) I could see they were still sticking together when they passed us by just south of the start point. Either they were frozen in place and too cold to make a break away, or keeping warm in the comfort of the pace line. Inside the park loop road things got a little interesting, skaters had to get creative as they dodged thru runners standing in line for registration that crossed the loop road (oops), followed by veering around a few trucks that were on the course, making passing an challenging experience. Hey, these guys are pro's and, no worries everyone made it saefy thru the unexpected obstacles. A few skaters took a wrong turn inside the loop road, while others sought out waht seemed to be the never ending finish line...was it here?.... here?...okay, here it is! Granted the 5K course was a few 10th's or so longer than the normal 5K(3.1 miles), so skaters times were longer as result. All in all everyone made it to the finish safely and had more fun that a barrel of monkeys tubing down the icey slopes of the wasatch.
A special thanks to the City of West Jordan, Victims Assistance Program, and West Jordan City Motor Patrol for their support of the skating event, and their gracious help in making this event happen. And, many more thanks to our event Sponsors: RAPs, BONE's Bearings, and Mogema Sports for their kind donation of raffle items.
And, a meg- thanks to you, the skaters, for continued support of our sport, your sport. Keep rolling!
See you skating next year in West Jordan!

"Let the Good Food and Good Times Roll! "
Saturday's Race was fast, as promised! Salt Lake Long Track Sprinter Andrew Love made no exception to the rule; crossing the finish in a Draper Course Record time of 8:24!! ANDREW, You GO!! Visit Andrew's blog for personal insight to the his world of speedskating: andrew love Hot on Andrew's trail were Uel Archulette (8:27) and Eva Rodansky (8:29), both with very impressive finishes. Uel's pro-racing expertise delivered him an exceptionally fast finish, squashing 17 seconds off his previous time of 8:44 from 2005! It's no surprise Eva took first in Women's division, slamming her previous course times of 9:05(2005) and 8:50(2004) into the ground! Visit Eva's blog for personal insight to the skating world: eva rodanasky. Shane Minor and Eric Johnson took it to the line, battling it out wheel-to-wheel across the finish in the 11-19 yr division! Our youngest skater, 7 year old Alec Evans completed the 5K course in 22:24 with a strong sprint at the finish!
Morning temps hovering in the high 70's were comfortable. The downhill along 13800 South was extra fast as sections had been re-paved since last years event. This made for an intense high-speed 90 degree turn for racers. Then it was smooth skating along the slight dowhill on Fort street. The right turn on 13200 south led skaters into a slight headwind and "almost" imperceptible uphill. Then is was a quick left onto 1300 East with a straight shot into the finish gate, where Eric awaited timing skaters.
We saw a few skaters from the states of California, Oklahoma and Wyoming were among the local crowd. All had a great time! Medals were awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places in both Men's and Women's Divisions. The event wrapped up with a raffle of skating goodies from event sponsors: BONT, POWERSLIDE, K2 and 'the SkateNow shop'. Everyone received something - it was like Christmas in July. Following was a panccake breakfast in the park hosted by the local Lion's Club.
T-SHIRT Pick up: If you still did not get your event t-shirt, please keep you bib stub and contact SkateNow.
MEDALS Pick up: If you did nto receive your event medal, please contact SkateNow to pick it up.
Special thanks to skate event volunteer Melissa Johnson for her help with Registration and doing finish line photos!!
A HUGE Thanks goes out to Fred Ross, Draper Days volunteers, and Draper police motor cycle patrol for another sucessful year of inline rolling fun!
